About Ernest Schilders

Professor Schilders has a unique profile in that he combines expertise in medical conditions of the soft tissues around the hip and groin with extensive hip arthroscopy experience. Professor Ernest Schilders is the country’s leading expert on adductor problems in athletes and has spent more than 15 years researching on this subject. He has treated players from the majority of Premiership and Championship teams.

Hip arthroscopy is a highly specialised and technically demanding procedure that should only be done by surgeons with extensive experience. Professor Schilders started off as a shoulder specialist before taking up hip arthroscopy. As both joints have similarities in anatomy, he transferred his expertise in complex shoulder arthroscopy to the hip and has been pioneering complex procedures in the hip ever since.

Professor Schilders has given hundreds of lectures nationally and internationally on these subjects. He is dedicated to the teaching of arthroscopic techniques and regularly receives visiting surgeons from within the UK and overseas.

The research he conducts is mainly focused on femoroacetabular impingement, the athletic hip and adductor problems in athletes. Professor Schilders’ research team is running a screening program on the prevention of hip and groin problems in athletes. We are also working hard to improve rehab aiding a faster return to activities after surgery.

Professor Schilders is a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the British and American Journal of Sportsmedicine, Sportmedicine and the Journal of Anatomy. In 2008, Ernest Schilders was appointed Visiting Professor in Sports Medicine at Leeds Metropolitan University. He lectures on several sports medicine courses and is also one of the founding members of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK.
